Hi there- I just wanted to notify the community that I went to my first REI meeting last night. The group meets every first Tuesday. I live in central Illinois and it was a really good meeting. A lawyer spoke about LLC's. What I liked was to be able to talk to and see the various investors from my area. The was a guy there who controlled 80 units! I cannot imagine me doing something like that (although with time something like that could happen for me). I spoke with someone who I knew was an investor but did not know he would be at the meeting. He informed me that he would be happy to meet with me to discuss what my plan is to start. I'm excited for this. I want to begin but I need proper education to avoid serious mistake. I am willing to put the time in to learn how to do this properly.

Hi again all-

Again, thank you for all the responses. I wanted to mention that I am reading your suggestions and I have found out where the central Illinois REI is located. It's actually not far from my house and the meeting is on the 6th. I will be in attendance. Thank you again for informing me about the REI.

Thank you @Melissa Kirchhoff and @Peter for the words of knowledge.

Melissa- I'm thinking of buying and holding to start. My plan to start is to become educated through a mentor.

Thanks for the response Rob. Would you mind if I follow you on here? My community (Bloomington/Normal) is over 100,000 people. It's part college town, part business town as both the corporate headquarters of State Farm and Country Financial Services are located here. Illinois State University is here as well. Being a college town, I believe this is a good area for real estate. Thanks again.

I appreciate the response Luke. Would you mind if I follow you on here? I see you're in Collinsville and I'm a little familiar with that area as I have family around there. I have family that lives in Swansea and family outside of St. Louis. They're SIUE grads and stayed in that area.  They're somewhat interested in real estate as well but I'm the first to put myself out there on a forum like this.  I would really like a mentor and that's what I'm looking for right now. Thirty minutes is nothing and definitely worth looking around so close to me. Thanks again for responding. If you have any other words of wisdom I am certainly willing to listen.

Hi all-

I live in central Illinois, about halfway between Chicago and St. Louis, two hours each way. I want to learn the business of real estate investing. I want to get involved but I don't know where to start. Any suggestions on how to start would be appreciated.
