HB 1165 achieved another huge milestone yesterday when it passed the Senate!

In order to assure passage of the bill as amended and drafted by the Office of the Attorney General, Rep. Burton has agreed to “concur” with the Senate version of the bill. No further deliberations are needed. It will now head back to the House for a vote as soon as possible and then on to the Governor to sign it into law. It will be effective as of his signature.

You can find a copy of the latest version of the bill and more details here: http://iga.in.gov/legislative/2020/bills/house/1165.

An Alternative To Replacement

If you had an older car that ran fine but had nicks, dents, and a dull ugly finish you might think, “It’s time for a new car”, or you might reason,“since I know of a reputable auto body shop just down the road, why should I spend the extra money to buy a new car when this one is paid for and I can make it look like new for a lot less money than buying a new car.”

With the rising cost of materials, landlords as well as those who buy and sell houses have to balance the cost of updating with the profit they will receive from the changes they make on their property.

The bathroom and the kitchen are the most expensive areas to update, but also are the biggest selling/renting factors with most people. So, many have found that refinishing such items as kitchen counters, cabinets, fiberglass, porcelain bathtubs, ceramic wall, floor tile, as well as bath vanities and counter tops is a cost effective way to remodel at a cost saving of up to 75% of replacement.

Does it hold up?

Refinishing companies are like a lot of businesses, there are businesses that take pride in their work and use quality products and then, there are those that are out for the quick buck and cut corners to save themselves time and money at the expense of quality and durability.

If you have had bad experiences in the past be assured that there are reputable companies out there that use very durable products and take the time to prep the surface right, which is so important in the refinishing process.

Technology in the past few years has yielded new durable coatings and primers that are very chemical and impact resistant and will retain their color and shine for years to come.

How do I find a company that is reputable?

1. Ask them what kind of finishes they use. They should tell you if it is a catalyzed urethane or an epoxy, ( epoxies are great for primers but they will dull and yellow with time, they are a less expensive coating, but that’s not to your advantage)

2. Ask for references. They should have happy customers and be willing to get you in touch with them.

3. Most companies offer a one year warranty on rentals and homes for sale, some offer a longer warranty because they have more confidence in their product. ( local companies who have done business in Indy for years will stand behind their warranty. )

4. Ask the company if, they have insurance, have a web site, are on Anges list, etc. (Some companies will offer long warranties or cheap prices only to go out of business and reappear as a new company later, leaving you with no warranty and a cheap job, in more than one way. “You get what you pay for, as the saying goes.”

A good refinishing company will be honest with you when it comes to what can be refinished or what should be replaced, so find that company and you will have someone working for you that will save you money and will be an asset to your company.
