@Randall Re II Hi Randall, first of all, thank you for your service! To answer your question, I love the idea of rehabbing and flipping homes. Getting involved in the construction aspect really interests me but I don’t know how realistic that will be if I’m going to be investing out of state where I can’t be there to watch it all go on. So I’m thinking to buy something with a mgmt company in place and rent ready to start out and take it from there!

@Ryan Cleary Hi Ryan, You can say that again about NY. Overrated in my option haha though I do LOVE Long Beach! I own a SFH as well (as our main residence) and a 2 family home with my brother, both in Nassau. Thanks so much for your advice. I would love to connect and ask you some questions and discuss Ohio if you're willing.

I have to say, everyone I’ve encountered here on BP so far is super welcoming and helpful. It helps ease fears when starting out. Support is key!

Also want to extend a huge congrats to you on your Florida purchase!

@Tyler Bains Hi Tyler, Congrats on that purchase, it sounds fantastic! Thank you so much for the great advice, really appreciate it. When you’re first starting out theres so much out there and so much to learn especially when you haven’t really honed in on exactly what direction you want to go in so I’m trying to take it all in and have fun with it (like trying on a bunch of different pairs of shoes at the store haha) instead of letting it overwhelm me!

@Basit Siddiqi Hi Basit, Thanks for your reply! I don’t think there is anything in NY for 100k haha

I actually do have some family and a close friend out in Columbus Ohio. They just moved out there recently though so I haven’t been out there to visit yet. It’s hard to get away with the little ones. Another reason investing out of state scares me but I don’t know if there are any other options for investing in NY with that amount of money?

Hi Bigger Pockets, Just starting out here, took a leap and upgraded to "pro" today! I'm a mom of two younger kids. I work part time with my husband at his heating business. I worked as an agent doing rentals in NYC for about a year, 2013-14 but transitioned to working for a mid sized management company handling their in house leasing also in Manhattan for 5.5 years. I want to start investing in real estate as a way to make passive income and eventually achieve financial freedom for myself and my family. My goal is to purchase my first small multi family home within the next year. However given I live in New York (Nassau County) anything in the city and around my vicinity is way higher than I can afford (I have about 30-40k for a downpayment to work with) and so I'm considering starting out investing out of state. Though I have a lot of reservations buying out of state where I'm unfamiliar and do not have contacts. Has anyone started out investing out of their home town? Most of what I've been reading says to start out close to home so you can be hands on and learn which is what I would prefer. Any advice is appreciated!

Haha that sounds like fun! Do you know what kind of return he’s making annually?

Hi, I’m new here! 👋 Have about 10k saved and interested in learning more about investing in real estate. Since it’s not nearly enough to buy a property (especially living in New York) I came across real estate investment trusts (REITS) and was intrigued. Anyone who has knowledge to share on this topic please do! Also, if anyone has any other suggestions for ways to invest 10k in real estate I’m all ears!
