@Taylor L. thanks! That's one I've never heard about before. Looks like I'll be doing some more research this evening.

@Jessica Franta thank you. What search engine were you using to find these? Also, our intention are to occupy the home, so that's right up our alley.

@Patti Robertson thank you! I really do appreciate the info. Yes, Norfolk is on our radar as well ( I should've mentioned that ahead of time) and I will definitely join the tidewater group. We're honestly looking to get as much info as possible while staying true to our goals and budget.

@Joshua Saunders thank you for that info. I've been reading about live-in flips, we've just never considered that an option because it seemed very complex on the surface. However, we are open to doing that. My wife and I are a bit weary of living with others, though which is why we aren't really enthused about house hacking but we're willing to do what's necessary. To answer your questions, I've been researching REI for about 6 months now and we think the top of the year 2020 is when we want to be moving in somewhere but we're going to start looking around June-timeframe. And yes, we are working with an agent.

Hi, my wife and I are looking to start our real estate investment journey in the near future (6 months). We've been doing lots of research and we decided that the best way for us to start would be by purchasing a duplex and renting one side out and living in the other side. However, as we've been searching, we've come to realize that duplexes are really hard to come across (we currently live in Virginia Beach,VA). So my question is, what are other ways to begin investing in real estate? Should we consider purchasing a home and then house hacking a room or two? What other options do we have available?
