I own a STR in a neighborhood of all regular single family homes (not vacation market). It is tricky. Our STR license requires we notify all immediate neighbors in a letter about our STR with our contact info. I introduced myself the first day and made a point to learn all their names and build relationships (brought cookies to one elderly neighbor, played basketball with another neighbor's kids, etc.) They were not super happy at first but now they know us, have seen that the guests aren't partiers or causing issues and we have a relationship built up where they would tell me if they saw an issue. However, their complaints could shut us down in an instant. We bought our STR because it also meets the 1% rule should we need to convert it to a long term rental. I would not buy an STR unless it did or was in a vacation destination. A wonderful STR in a nearby market was closed down by the city because the neighbors complained for no reason other than they didn't like not having a regular family next door.
