I'm looking at doing this myself. I checked some of the tech cities minus Raleigh and House hacking in the traditional sense with multi families looks tough but not impossible. If you do the traditional SFH and rent out rooms seems more doable but a little less privacy. I'm looking at Austin because my better half likes the oops in TX. Raleigh may be less inflated at this juncture if your ok with NC.

Thanks! Nice to see the prompt responses.

I'm in the tech industry so that mostly limits me to the hotter markets. I'm in San Diego right now and my better half wishes to have a more affordable location. A decent SFH here is a minimum of 600k. Much of my goals here are to reduce costs and build assets.

I'm looking to cover at least part of the mortgage and get some good loan paydown and save up for my next investment eventually turning the first into a rental property with positive cash flow.

We've narrowed our locations down to Austin vs. Plano TX. Our primary criteria are a good school district and commute time to the city center and 2 bedrooms for us.

As far as comfortability, we want to be relatively comfortable. The traditional multi-family route seemed to offer good comfortability with tenants. If the numbers just don't work my our chosen areas, we may have to get more creative.

Thanks,

Tom

Hello Everyone,

I’m about to jump in to some investment and want to jump in feet first into some house hacking.

I’ve started the process by getting a pre-approval letter with with my bank. I’ve done a bit of scanning of my different target markets on Redfin/Zillow/Realtor.com but feel I need a Realtor I can trust with knowledge in purchase of rental properties of small multi family homes to help along the way.

I will probably be relocating during this process as my current location is too pricey. I am looking at Austin, Dallas, Denver and Raleigh. How should I approach finding a realtor for a house hack in any of these areas?

Thanks,

Tom
