I am purchasing my first property in January. I know one of the bathrooms needs remodeled, however I am unsure what else needs work. Could a contractor take a look at my entire house and tell me exactly what needs to be done to increase the value of the house or do I need to contact someone else?

@Aaron K. I believe the property is worth nearly 250k. Would you recommend getting a contractor in to see what all needs to be renovated first that way I have an estimate? And when should I look to get an appraisal?

@Aaron K. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Right now I am gearing up to buy my first property that I myself have been paying rent on for two years now. It is a 4 bedroom 1.5 baths. The seller is a family member so she is going to sell it to me below market value at about 190k. It is in pretty good shape but I would like to do some rehabbing of about 10-15k, rent it out, then refinance. I was hoping to take the equity from that and purchase something else.

Although my first buy will be a single family I really want to focus on multi families after this but I am in Winchester, VA which is not a very good market for multi's.

Next year I plan on moving with my family near Austin, Texas.

Thanks in advance.

I am new to real estate investing. I am based just outside of the Washington, DC metro area and would love to shadow a seasoned investor to learn as much as possible. I can clean vacant properties, or whatever is needed. I am just eager and ready to learn.
