@Joshua Janus It's great to hear there are other comp sci students looking into real estate! I'd definitely be interested in house hacking once I'm done with college so I'll be sure to get familiar with the requirements for an FHA loan as well as prepare myself for the venture. Balancing a full time job with school sounds very difficult so congrats on being able to do that! Currently, I'm looking to save money to purchase properties at tax sales for my area (Louisiana and Mississippi). Let me know if you have any advice on that front :)

Thanks for the in-depth advice!
The apartment I'm staying in is actually paid for by a university scholarship, so I don't have to worry too much about the rent there.
I will definitely analyze the properties like you said and "make an offer" to practice and learn. I've been looking for a way to jump into real estate without risking a bunch of money, and this is fantastic way to do that!
I love checklists and systems! I'll definitely be using those to analyze deals like you said. I really appreciate how you can take a systematic approach to real estate (besides managing renters I assume). I'll also make sure my first deal is low risk like you mentioned.
I actually didn't think about having BP analyze my lists and such. That's a fantastic idea! It's always better to have a fresh (and knowledgeable) pair of eyes look over something you've done.
You hurt my feelings by being an LSU fan, but I appreciate the advice nonetheless.

Thanks for the reply! It's nice to hear from a fellow person starting out. It seems like everyone is super experienced in these forums (which is great but a little daunting). I'm sure we'll both become experienced enough to help people in these forums!

Thanks for the reply! I will definitely continue educating myself and putting money towards that. I've been learning about real estate for a month now, and there seems to be a nearly endless supply of information (which is a little terrifying and incredibly exciting). I hope I'll be in great shape when I get my first rental property.
I'm currently staying at an apartment. I've looked into house hacking. Currently, I don't really have the opportunity to do it, but I'd love to do it in the future.
I am a computer science major in my sophomore year of college. I'm not sure if computer science is a common field of work in the BP community, but I'd be interested to hear if anyone is in it.

@Spencer Hoyt Hey Spencer, thanks for the reply! If you'd be willing to help me and my brother (he's my partner with investing in real estate) in affording some properties, that'd be great! In the meantime, I'd honestly appreciate any advice on what I should be aware of when thinking of buying a property. I know location is a very big deal, but I'm kind of unsure of what else to look for.

Hello, I'm a newbie as well.
I'm currently reading The Book on Rental Property Investing by Brandon Turner, and I think it's a worthwhile read when starting out! It gives a very good rundown on what you need to know before getting into rental properties. Hope this helps!

Hello, BiggerPockets Community.
I'm a college student looking to invest in multi-family rental properties in my area (Lafayette, LA). Right now, I don't have enough money to buy a rental property, so I'm spending the meantime saving up money and learning as much as possible about real estate. I was just wondering if anyone else is in a similar position.
