One thing to do: If the movie "Pacific Heights" comes on the TV, change the channel...

Most companies in US avoid federal income taxes

By JENNIFER C. KERR, Associated Press Writer 41 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Two-thirds of U.S. corporations paid no federal income taxes between 1998 and 2005, according to a new report from Congress.

The study by the Government Accountability Office, expected to be released Tuesday, said about 68 percent of foreign companies doing business in the U.S. avoided corporate taxes over the same period.

Collectively, the companies reported trillions of dollars in sales, according to GAO's estimate.

"It's shameful that so many corporations make big profits and pay nothing to support our country," said Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., who asked for the GAO study with Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich.

An outside tax expert, Chris Edwards of the libertarian Cato Institute in Washington, said increasing numbers of limited liability corporations and so-called "S" corporations pay taxes under individual tax codes.

Funny...

Are you where NASA runs the shuttle program? If so, the RE market there might be disrupted once the program ends (which is soon, IIRC)...

These entities should be nationalized immediately, the execs and all their lobbyests put on the street, and, like other companies that have gone down in flames, shareholders should get away with little or nothing.

While I agree with the sentiment, I take the opposite tack. They should be completely privatized immediately, and the shareholders should be subject to the same risks that any other stock has. The housing system can work without any Federal guarentees -- implicit or explicit.

Either or IMO. The current situation is that profits are privatized , but losses are socialized (as Wheatle indicated). Fully one or the other would be much more equitable.

Good luck to you! That's a very good amount to have amassed at such a young age, you are off to a very good start.

That is GWB -- Like him or hate him, Bush has a vision/ideology and stands by it. Like his vision or hate his vision, that is an admirable quality.

I disagree - I consider it incompetence. Bad decisions are bad decisions, regardless of how they're arrived at, even if by faithfully adhering to a flawed ideology.

As to why McCain was nominated, I don't think it's a coincidence that the GOP nominated a moderate, as 8 years of conservative rule has effectively discredited the ideology for the time being. I think most republicans realize that, and would rather win the WH with a moderate than lose with a conservative.

Would you pay GWB for investment advice?
