Post: Does home owning even make sense in Austin?

I’m currently renting my residence and am splitting rent ($1450) with my girlfriend. As much as I hate to give my money to a land lord and miss out on any equity build up through loan pay down or appreciation, there are a few benefits.

No maintenance costs, I get to live in a decent location (78746) and have a much shorter commute to work and central Austin.

With the ridiculous pricing in the Austin market, house hacking is almost obsolete. If going the SFH route, I'd have to drop a whopping 25% down on a property around 200-230K just to keep my payments as low as they are now.

And to top it off I’d have to sacrifice location and move much further north or south.

As the title suggests, does home owning even make sense in the Austin Market? Or am I better off investing my money in properties further out that can actually produce CF and continue renting my primary residence?

Thanks!

Shawn

Yeah that seems to be the general consensus amongst those I’ve talked to. Not too surprising, though still disappointing.

I don’t know a whole lot about the SA area, but hear of other investors in Austin focusing there. Another area that would make sense for me is the DFW metroplex, with me having lived there for 6 years and knowing the area. However the market isn’t much less competitive there either..

Hello, I’m new on BP and new to the Austin area. I was really hoping to get a better feel for the market down here and hear from some others in this area.

I am not delusional to the fact that this is an extremely hot and competitive market, and not getting much easier with the sheer amount of people moving to Austin everyday.

I was wondering how viable it is trying to compete in the Austin market, specifically with the goal of buying and holding small multi-family homes?

I am also interested in knowing  what the market may be like in surrounding cities such as Round Rock or Pflugerville?
