Some good answers in here, but I am in a similar situation as Eric and am taking the same route very soon.  I plan on house hacking which if you have a bit of cushion in your bank account, is pretty low risk, solid reward. 

Worst case scenario is that I pay for the whole duplex myself (spending the same as I currently do in rent).  Best case scenario, I live mostly, if not entirely rent free while setting aside a portion of the rent I collect for capital expenditures/maintenance etc.  If things go as though they should, it will free up some money to do with as I wish, which in your situation would be to pay down your student loans or potentially invest in more Real Estate.
