Uwe

I've looked into it some more and you are correct. I've done some research into Allentown and the stat look better/safer than Albany. And, it's closer to me (+). I've looked into a few properties and sent some emails for information.

Thanks....Any more advise you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all the input.

I've decided to take the advice and picked an area closer and with a lower crime rate. I was pointed to Allentown PA and have been doing some research and think I'm going to start there. It's about 1:30-2 drive from where I live and the area is more stable. I probably will have to start with a smaller place but that might mean less of a headache or at least a more manageable one.

I'm looking for a buy and rent out property.

I'm still looking into Allentown. I'm also still considering the Albany area because I have a sibling in school up there and figured I'd be up there more and have someone in the area if anything would need to be done asap or just drive by to see if everything is ok. Thoughts?

Thanks for the advise. I've been ready to some ppl and have been getting the same feedback on Detroit. I have since been looking for some more stable and closer and am focus on the Albany area. The home prices might not be a cheap but the neighborhood and area might be more starter friendly. Agree???

Hi all,

I'm new to the real estate thing and looking into buying my first investment property. I am based in NYC but looking to possible buy something in Detroit. I've been doing a lot of research and keep coming up to this site so figured I might as well sign up since I spend so much time read the post.

I picked/leaning on Detroit because I've read that the market is reasonable and rental market is good. I am looking to buy something that is not too much money up front so I can have some reserves for the hiccups that are sure to come. I've read some much that I'm not even sure where to start. So, I welcome and would appreciate any and all advice.

Thanks in advance for all your advice.

Hendrix

I am new to the real estate thing but am going to try and purchase my first investment property. I am in NYC but looking into getting something in the Detroit area. I am doing research and there seems to be a endless amount of information and I'm not exactly sure where to start.

Just some background. I picked Detroit basically because I read that the market is fairly inexpensive and has a reasonably good rental market. This is my first property and I anticipating a few hiccups so I rather not spend a lot of money on the property so I can have some in reserve for the OMG moments.

So, can anyone advise on what my first set should be? I do plan on going there but would like to do as much from NYC as possible.

Any and all advice is well come and appreciated!!
