Thanks for the responses everyone. I decided to look at other states because NJ needs a larger initial investment since house prices are higher here. 

House hacking is not an option since I have a family. 

I understand your concerns about investing in a distant marker, and will certainly have another look at areas that are within driving distance.

I’m a NJ resident and just starting my real estate investment journey. I’m considering Indianapolis as a potential market. Like most cities, I understand there are areas to avoid, but I’ve noticed that many houses there are within my budget and seem to be in decent shape.

I’d love to hear your thoughts or advice about investing in Indianapolis.
