Can a contractor put a lien on home if home owner did not hire him and contract not signed

if a contractor goes and drives a round town too like fax paper get notray can he charge for payment and still has not send any paper work in and permit still not pulled

No money has been exchanged

Is it ok to fire a contractor if you did not hire him and no contract been signed

we are not that kind of people we just want our home repaired and back to living. Yes I have heard of home owners doing just that. Also contractor doing the same. We just want the right answers and advice on how to go about all this mess so many say many words on how to do the money. I have reason to spend the house money for myself but I don't want the contractor to take my money and be gone or use it for another project rebuild

Thank you much your words have just settle my nerves. Now would it ok too make my own some what contract for the contractor and have them sign it as too how much is put forward and how much to give at a finished project or add on and then completion

ok so I can deni him from putting check in his account and get a proper amount for deposit or half down 

But this contractor says the checks all amount go to his account

that I pay them sertin amount in payments
