@Mackal Smith, thanks for the info! I'll be sure to look into those.  I work in South County so that could be a perfect opportunity.

@Alex Tillman  I'll be looking at the Eureka and surrounding areas to get started.  The Rockwood school district has a lot to offer and I've seen a few successful flips happen right in my neighborhood in the last 6 months or so.  My background very much lends itself to the rehabbing aspect of real estate investment.  I'm also considering becoming a certified home inspector.  It seems like a great way to learn more about what to look for in a prospective rehab and the extra income won't hurt either.

I graduated from Missouri State, John.  Springfield is a great city with a lot to offer. Best Italian food in town can be found at DiGiacinto's ;)

Thank you very much Jamie!  Being from the area, do you recommend any local networking opportunities?

Thanks for reply Ed.  I figure I'll have to explore all of my options and mix and match when the time comes but welcome the advice from others in the meantime.

Literally just get starting.  I've ordered a couple books to begin the education process(they haven't arrived yet) but the burning question I have is "where will we get the money to get started?"  I'm curious how others in my shoes went about acquiring the funds necessary to purchase their first property. I'm generally aware of my options but would like to hear where others found success and at the same time where you didn't.  Thanks in advance for the advice!

I stumbled onto the this community after several Google searches kept turning up valuable and informational articles on real estate investment via BiggerPockets.com.  I spent some time out of college self-employed working for different high-end home remodeling contractors before taking a "9-5" desk job.  It's been 3 years and I'm tired of looking out the window wishing I were doing something different so I'm making the decision to chase my dreams.  I plan on doing all the research I can to educate myself before taking the plunge and this community looked like as good a place as any to start.
