What is it about that area that you like? We go camping in that area. It's a great corner of the state close to Chicago with nice beaches.

Dylan makes a great point: Founders is an exceptional brewery, and Dirty Bastard is amazing if you like your beer chewy. FYI, all the towns surrounding GR are worth a look, especially heading southwest. Muskegon is a bit shakey in sections, but has some great beaches and really nice sections too. The Lake Michigan coast on the Michigan side blows California away.  At least in the 5 months without snow. Ah, but then there is the beer....

Any agriculturally zoned areas outside of town? If you are dealing with equipment and need a barn, this may better fit your needs.

You're on a good track. My fist thought is that East Lansing is not the most landlord friendly town.  Probably skip Lansing too for now.  I'd look in Haslett, DeWitt, Holt, Mason, and Williamston too. I'm a newbe who just bought a 4 plex in Grand Ledge. I'm happy to share my attorney-blessed version of Brandon Turner's lease when you're ready.  I know a good and affordable painter too!  There is a good Rei group in Lansing if you check meet ups.

The surrounding areas are worth a look too: Plymouth, Canton, Saline, Northfield, Chelsea. Ypsilanti has potential too, but watch the neighborhood.
