Lets just say I have about $13,000 in the bank I make about $15/hr and want to get started in real estate investing but I'm scared of losing money and if I do they say I should start in my area because I'm familiar here but I cant start in NYC I wouldn't be able to afford it what should I do?

Could I rent out a condo in NYC because a friend told me I cant it is illegal to do and if I could would I make a good profit off it particularly a 1br or 2br?
