Wow .. bunch of great info.

Just to add for clarification there was NO where during the application process where I said I was going to deny them and was actually considering them, then just the thought about the bread winner being away from work for a while was conserning. I do regret asking the questions the way I did without thinking too much of it because the tenant seemed very focused and motivated to rent the property, I thought it wouldn't be a big deal but boy was I wrong, people are very unique.

I will definetly incorporate Sue's question into my applications in the future.

Thanks for the input, I was definetly not trying to discrimate in anyway, my mindset at the time was, will they have the finances to make rental payments when the baby came before I drew up a lease. I sensed that they may not have had the finances ready because the tenants seemed rushed and nervous. Also, it would be difficult for me morally to start an enviction process during that time.

Hi,

I'm a first time landlord, long story short I had a potential tenant very interested in the property that cleared all the checks.

The tenants were having a baby soon, and the wife was making the larger income of the two. Knowing this, I asked when the baby was due, how long is she planning to take maternity leave and is the leave paid for, if the leave is not paid for I asked for a copy of their bank statement to verify the cushion.

The tenants were immediately offended that I was asking for way too much personal information, and declined on wanting to rent the property. Was this asking for too much? I thought it was a valid justification.
