Aloha Mitch, great to hear your story. I am an investor and used to organize meet-ups here in Honolulu prior to Covid. We have several groups and meet-ups, most of them being online. One of the most popular one is probably Coffee Talk every Friday. 

I would start with your end goal in mind. If you're looking for cashflow, Hawaii is not the best market. If you're looking for steady appreciation or flipping then yes. And if you're looking to get into any market it is always good to network and see if you can find a reputable agent or investor in that market to help and guide you. 

Andrew, Big Island has different areas where you can use USDA loan which is 0% down. Maybe consider that and save on downpayment and use it to start in real estate right away.
