Post: Just Starting Out, Looking into Pittsburgh, PA

Welcome! Pittsburgh is a great area to invest, with the growing market it is a good place to start with real estate investing. Speaking as an investor in the area I would suggest taking a good portion of that 80k to keep on hand for repairs. A lot of the homes in the area, while nice, are older and come with some repairs needed. But, if you buy right it can be a great cash flowing investment. If you have any questions about specific areas or want to bounce ideas I would be happy to chat.

Hey @Garrett Holbrook! I’m also somewhat new at bigger pockets looking at getting into my first deal! From what information I have gathered, over my learning period, is that the south side slopes can be hard to find the right property. I completely agree with @Phil Anderson about needing to physically look at a property and see what the value is. That type of area is a very specific street by street case when it comes to good and bad rentals in the area. If I were you I would take a drive by the place and look beyond the property to see if it’s an overall solid street to get renters in. Otherwise it won’t  matter what’s your numbers say if no one wants to rent the property because they feel usafe in the area. I would love to chat sometime to get your overall personal perspective in the market as well! Best of luck!!

Jay Cooper , I have seen that for most of the properties if you can bring rents up to market value their can be a ton of value to be had. But, if the taxes are this high it can eat profit pretty quickly. And overall I feel like it can been a good place to invest in since it’s within reach of most of the colleges. But, I am quite new so I may need to look into this more.

Jim K. Wow!! Thank is quite the difference. I guess you really have to have your numbers pretty solid to make an investment in that area work.

Hello everyone,

Does anyone here actively invest in the Wilkinsburg area? I would love to get your take on the area as a whole. Their are a few properties I have seen that might be of interest and I’m looking for some insight.

Thanks in advance!

@Alex Deacon I am somewhat familiar with property management in the Pittsburgh area but I have not had a chance to understand specifics. If you have any time I would love to pick your brain about using a property management company to help support rental investments.

Nice to meet you @Heather Moore! I would love the opportunity to exchange ideas. I am looking to househack myself and have really been trying to understand the Pittsburgh market. Hopefully we can meet up sometime and exchange knowledge.

Thank you @Chris Wakley and @Dave Visaya for the warm welcome. I'm glad to be here! @Chris Wakley do you  invest in Erie, Pa? or do you have ventures and properties elsewhere?
