Post: What should I be looking for in a Mentor

Hi everyone, my name is Pete and I am looking for a mentor. I am a 30 year old Project manager for a large NYC based facilities firm and have been in the construction industry for 12 years. I have been bitten by the real estate bug, HARD, but I realize that there is a ton for me to learn in. I have put myself in the position to be able to let go of my job and devote myself to learning this new trade. The plan is to shadow a true real estate professional for sometime and absorb as much as possible. What should I be looking for in a mentor? Is there a specific type of investor I should try to work with? And finally, can I take any potential mentors out there in the NYC or surrounding areas out for a cup of coffee ;)

Thanks!!!

Thanks everyone for all your feedback. I did a ton of research and looked a some properties in Philadelphia after reading your responses. I decided that since I am new to investing in real estate and will need to self manage anything I purchase, Section 8 housing is not right for me and my current position. That said, when I do get in a better position, I like this approach and will certainly include these properties in my portfolio. Again, I really loved the feedback and appreciate all of your help!!

Hi everyone, I am a project manager for a large NYC based maintenance company and am working on finding my very first deal. I am thinking about section 8 housing. I would love to hear from you more seasoned investors about the pros and cons of this strategy. Thanks again, Pete
