Bite the bullet and finish the job ...talk to your father about his problem ..what ever it is.  someone is not being totally honest. reassess the financial picture and the relationship with your father. if you love him money won't matter... uphold your honor and help him by taking the higher ground

even a highly experienced contractor would be guessing ...you have to plan for worst case and that would be shoddy design and or construction ...this is usually the tip of the iceberg ...making everything in the house suspect... know when to say when ...if you are not good with power tools it's a walk... don't ruin your free time with frustration,  I'd buy new or one with potential with 203k money can make like new.  Good luck take it from a guy who's seen the **** they call houses... I have enough lead and asbestos in my blood to kill any palm rat who bites...take my word for it... buy new ...your chances of happiness will be much greater.  working 7 days a week will kill you first or your marriage...don't chase a mirage that others offer... stay within your means conservatively and don't let keeping up with the Joneses kill your quality of life

remember the cardinal rule about real estate ... it's the location first...you want the bad property in the best neighborhood...all the money is made in the buy. you buy wrong and your dreams will take a hit. trust no one with a conflict of interest ...the most dangerous sharks have beautiful pearly whites ...pay an old retired rehabber to ride around with you! nightmares aren't just for halloween night...

looks like poor construction from the start  ...take your money and run.  I can only imagine what the remainder of the house looks like.  ...if the quality of the construction is good then I would probably have reason to believe this problem is isolated to this particular area. another question I would ask would be about flooding in the area. pay a trusted professional and save yourself from a disaster!  a good resource is the neighbors who live nearby
