I agree Marilyn - it is hard.  I too figured I'd take the exam and do fairly well; at least enough to pass.  So I took a sample 'test' from a NYS book I purchased and didn't do so well.  I admit I was surprised since I had what I thought was a good handle on terms, etc. but apparently not enough.  Then thought I'd take a Real Estate U course.  I haven't taken it so I can't comment on how it is.

Where do BP members suggest one go to get educated to take the NYS exam?

Is it worthwhile since having a license is not a necessity for investing?

I like your suggestions Billy.  I toy around with the idea of getting a NYS license, but I am really burned out from formal schooling.  I returned for my bachelors later in life and now I find myself re-educating myself on investing [I guess you could say I'm a lifelong learner].  I like the flexibility and not having a formalized means of study, but it does take discipline, diligence, contacts and money certainly doesn't hurt either.

I'm from  the Western NY region and have frequented Fla often [think snowbird].  I am hoping to invest in the Fla market in the near future too.  I'm partial to the west coast though.  It seems buying out of town would be complicated given limited time for finding  the right property and negotiations etc.  Factor in travel and the likely-hood that multiple trips would be needed and expenses could really add up.  Wow, makes me think about some members traveling from Israel to expand their portfolio --impressive.  Ideas to starting this venture; sometime it seems like this idea is more of a pipe dream than reality.

Welcome to BP Nicolai; the recommendation from Dominic, isn't a bad idea. There are good deals to be had and 'hacking' (as I think Brandon calls it) can be great since being in the property gives you many benefits, but as such so are the responsibilities - just do your homework first.

I'm from the Buffalo/Niagara region. - nice to have someone closer than the city on board.  Any other Western New Yorker's out there?  We should connect.

That's a cool story and I'm glad it turned out well for you.  I haven't even thought about financing auto's (well except for the kids that is); and I'm about due for another auto.  I'm putting this idea in my tickler file.

Also thanks for answering other members questions as I was having some of the same ones.
