@David Faulkner that sounds like a smart plan. I've been reading other forums with the same suggestion. Thanks!

Thanks all for the great replies! I'm going to focus my energy on long term rentals then. I could see vacation rentals becoming a hassle, especially for a new guy like me.

I think starting in Puna.. maybe Keaau, HPP, Hawaiin Acres and Fern Acres would be a good idea, you think? Work my way into Hilo.

Long term would be having rentals on the Kona side, currently I wouldn't be able to buy anything there.

Do any of you know the general rent rates? For a SFR and maybe a duplex/4plex?

Thanks for helping me out!

Hey all, I think I'm posting in the correct forum.

I see that vacation rentals are very popular in Hawaii. I'm looking in the Puna area, south of Hilo.

For anyone who has experience there, what would be better, vacation rentals or long term type rentals?

Would people in Hilo, probably UHH students, rent in an area like Puna? It seems that one could get a good deal on a fixer upper, do some remodeling, and rent for a definite monthly cash flow in that area.

I would be living around Hilo and manage the properties until I could afford a PM company.

I'll answer any questions to help give you more understanding!

Any thoughts appreciated! Thanks!

@michealborger Yes, we are looking to buy! Is there a way you can message me more details? We have been looking around Fern Acres and Hawaiian Acres. Keaau would be neat too, depends a lot on the price! We're choosing the east side of the BI as it is most affordable.

Thanks and aloha to you guys too!

Hi everyone! Or whoever happens to see this. What do I say? I'm very interested in owning single family homes and multi family. My wife and I are in the process of moving to the big island of Hawaii, near Hilo! I look forward to learning as much as my brain can handle from you all! I'm 25, I want to get into real estate investing as soon as possible. My goals are to set up a good retirement, live partially or fully from passive income, and provide my community good affordable housing.
