@Ola Ade -  you have some real great options here from Texas to Florida. It's sad to see another Chicagoan leave our beautiful city, but understandably so. Please let us know if and when you make a decision and IF you decide to purchase a property in the state you live in - seems like there is a lot of opportunity to invest in other states!

I moved from Chicago to Phoenix 30 years ago and have no regrets.    The economy, and housing market, are booming and the weather is great.  Public schools are a bit behind and politics are way different than Chicago. I traveled all over the country for work for the past few decades and still love Phoenix.

Hi Ola. Charlotte might be worth taking a look at it given the criteria you listed. Charlotte is like every metropolitan city in the fact that there is crime. The key is finding different pockets/zip codes where crime is less common. Until this year, it hadn't snowed in Charlotte in the past 3 years. Yes, it does get cold in the winter but it's nothing extreme. Charlotte and Raleigh might be two of the best cities in the US as far as real estate investing. Charlotte metro is a little overpriced at the moment but areas like Gastonia, Kannapolis, and Belmont should continue to see growth over the next couple of years. 

@Ola Ade What part of Chicago are you living in??  My wife and her two sisters moved from Chicago to Austin, Nashville, and Charleston (respectively).  I'd definitely recommend looking at all three.  I'm a little biased being from Texas, but Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio are all great options as well.
