Thanks to everyone for the replies and advice. I’m attempting mediation first then I’ll see what happens. Regardless of outcome, it’s a lesson learned.

I appreciate the insight. However based on what youre saying the seller had zero liability then since every document was in English. They could’ve signed anything but held zero liability if they claimed a language barrier? If thats the case, I guess the listing agent or broker would have liability for failing to provide their client with documents they can comprehend. The sellers disclosure form has to hold some form of weight. Had they told me of the issue, I would’ve done due diligence to check the severity. If what you say is true then what’s the point of the disclosure? Why not just mark “no” to everything all the time.

Yeah had it snaked and got two estimates. The second was even higher than the first. I’ve been in contact with an attorney and plan to move forward going that route. It’s unfortunate but I hope it resolves without me getting beat up too bad.

Thanks for the response! My thing is, even if they don’t know the extent of it they knew that it backed up when toilet paper was flushed so without notifying me of that I was unable to do my due diligence prior to closing. That has to hold some weight I’d hope.

Thanks for the response! The inspection didn’t mention a whole lot but the parts of the piping that I’m being told need to be replaced are under the basement and the front steps so those wouldn’t show up on an inspection anyway. The toilets flush fine if there’s no paper products in them. Unfortunately I do think settlement and having to swallow some of the cost is going to be best case scenario. However, the seller was Spanish speaking and her realtor translated the whole thing about not being able to flush toilet paper so there were witnesses to her telling me that. And it’s clear as day that she marked “no” to any sewage issues on the sellers disclosure. At this point I’m very hopeful that I get a more reasonable quote by this second plumber coming out today

This past Friday I closed on my first rental property. After all documents were signed the seller told me to not flush toilet paper down the toilet bc it backs up and she doesn’t want what happened to her to happen to me. My realtor kind of shrugged it off and said it’s not that uncommon in the area (PA, lower income area, old homes). So we left, all documents had already been signed. It didn’t sit well with me so today I had a plumber take a look and they quoted me $14,500 because pipes need replacing. Getting a second quote tomorrow. On the sellers disclosure the seller marked “no” to any sewage issues. What recourse do I have here? What’s my best next step?

Thanks for all the help in advance
