Quote from @Scott Mac:

Instead of focusing on what you want to learn, and hoping you will be a puzzle piece fit for learning that from someone else- chosen at random. Perhaps consider Making a one year, three year, 7 year plan for yourself as to what you want to accomplish real estate wise.

Once you have that then identify specific things that you think you need to learn to accomplish that plan.

Also be aware that you can simply buy the knowledge needed on an as needed basis, attorneys, CPA's, property managers, general contractors.

What you cannot buy is the overall life plan for yourself. That you must come up with.

If you're calling is to be a big time property manager, working full time at some place like Greystar properties as a property manager for two or three years we'll expose you to that end of the business as well as get you some benefits.

Good Luck!

Scott, the struggle I have had being so narrowly focused has shown me that I might need to open my criteria up for really anything in the industry. Nothing stopping me from changing again and learning something else like you said! I will take the time soon to plan out the next 10 years in some more detail. Do you have a certain way you like to go about goal setting for your career?

Quote from @Mark R.:
Hi Nicolas, welcome to BP. There are a lot of smart people here so you'll likely get some great feedback.  My two cents would be for you to make some connections in your extended sphere and try to have coffee with an agent, a lender, a property manager, or whoever you can find. What do they do day-to-day? What does the career ladder look like? What does a good day look like,  a bad day? They might have some connections for you too. If the role or industry seems like something that resonates with you, I would say go for it. If you become a real estate nerd like many of us, you'll make it a career and it will never get boring.

Thank you Mark, I have been doing as many virtual coffee chats as possible and it has really helped me to narrow my focus. I can't wait to meet some of these folks in person after making the move to Raleigh.

Hey BP Fam,

I have been listening to the pods and reading some of the books for about a year now and have really fallen in love with learning about Real Estate and all the various options there are in the industry. Obviously, this is more of an investor community, but many of you also work directly in the industry. This is exactly what I would like to do! I really want to move out of my hometown to the Raleigh area and with that move make a career change and get into Real Estate. I am only three years out of college (marketing) and the majority of my professional experience is in sales/ account management (B2C and B2B). I also have experience leading teams both professionally and for a non-profit organization

Moving forward I would like to get into something more operationally focused and learn how properties run and what makes a great one great! I have mainly focused my job search on Assistant Property/Project manager roles as I believe those would best fit my current skillset and experiences. With how much the Raleigh area is growing it seems like there is endless opportunity down there but I have struggled to get traction due to my lack of industry experience and local network.

I would love to talk with anyone who would be willing to offer advice or lend a hand in any way.
