Hi,

I'm looking for a second residence in the Orlando area (Kissimmee, etc.) that I would like to use myself for a few months of the year and then rent out the rest of the year. Ideally short term rental would cover the cost for the year, realistically I'm not looking for high cash flow since I'm using the house myself for part of the time. Since I spend quite some time there, the area is important and ideally also some draws that also appeal to renters (golf, pool, amusement parks, etc.).

* what areas can you recommend?
* are there any communities/country clubs/neighborhoods that are great for this kind of use?
* where is the highest rental potential in terms of $ and occupancy rate?
* is there a sweet spot for bedrooms or other features that I should be looking at?
* Any realtors here that are very familiar with the area and STR?

Any other tips you could give somebody who wants to get started in the real estate investment business? I have quite a lot of liquid cash but don't want to put more than $80k down which brings me to a $400k max price. We want to buy a strictly investment property after the first one as well...

Thanks!

Thanks @Angela Crewther, very helpful. I'll stay away from that area for now, unfortunately I don't have the luxury to not being able to cover the cost through STR.

Thanks @Mark Miles for your insights. I 100% agree with all the points you made. I'm also looking at Central Florida for pure investment properties for STR.

I currently live in NJ across the river from Manhattan which needless to say is a very expensive area which makes it more difficult to invest and have a decent ROI. The thought behind Lake Hopatcong was more to have a weekend getaway and cover the cost with STR rather than maximizing $$$.

    Hi,

I'm looking at a property at Lake Hopatcong, NJ (Jefferson, NJ) directly at a Lake for short term vacation rental and the occasional own use. Does anybody have experience with vacation rentals in that area? The season is not very long, but I still think there is potential with lake front property at the largest lake in NJ.

    Any feedback is appreciated.

@Bobby Hermosillo how big is the basement unit? Is it comparable to the main unit? Expecting to fetch $2500 for a basement unit seems high to me.
