@John Warren I don't think it's been a problem in the past. I only bought the place about three months ago. From what I can tell, the upstairs unit was added in the 70s, so it apparently has lasted.

I for sure have to put the range hood in. I was able to find a slim one which will fit in there nicely and at the proper height. Unfortunately, whenever my tenant cooks it gets crazy hot and smoky up there. Hoping the venting can mitigate that.

I'm not too far from you (Kenosha). Have you seen apartments in Chicago with similar configurations?

Hello all!

My wife and I recently bought a top and bottom duplex, where the old attic had previously been into the second unit. One thing I noticed about the upstairs unit is that the only place the oven can go in the kitchen (because of the gas lines) is really pretty close to the sloping roof. Currently the ceiling there is some sort of paneling. I honestly can't tell if it is metal or just super high gloss paint.

I am planning to add a range hood in the coming weeks and was wondering: should I just replace the ceiling material while I'm at it? And if so, what would be safest for being that close to a gas range?

Below is a photo of the space. And my tenants were in the middle of making dinner when that photo was taken, so don't give them too hard of a time on the mess. ;-)

Thanks!
