Hi Paul,

Thats just it. We owe $192,000, the house is valued at $200,000 right now. We pay around $1300 a month on the mortgage, though it looks like we'd only be able to rent it for $1200 right now...but that is based on very preliminary information from Zillow and Redfin. Other alternatives we've considered are to stay put and build up a down payment on a duplex, but again we are pretty green and I'm just trying to get an education right now!

Hi everyone,

My name is Matt Rose from Vancouver. I am a married father of 2 boys, and I work as a 5th grade teacher.

My wife and I purchased our house 6 years ago at the top of the market. We've spent the past 6 years underwater on our mortgage, and are just now at a point where we owe less than the value of the house. We decided that instead of just selling and moving on, it might be wiser to keep our house and rent it as the value continues to rise. This decision has led us to consider taking on real estate investing as a side business.

At the moment however we are really just planning our goals and strategies. We want to be sure we are making smart moves as we begin this journey. That led me to biggerpockets as the wealth of information available here is incredible.

I'll be updating as we get started!
