I agree with Saul. You should do some research about Detroit. Then you should connect with someone who has local knowledge of the areas. There are plenty of good areas in Detroit where you can get a good return. You just have to know how and where.

One of your first steps should be to join a REIA. No one will be willing to mentor you with them seeing that you are showing an effort to learn the business. Join a local REIA, and meet the people who are apart of the business. Then you can take things from there. Ask people questions, network, get phone numbers. If you have a Facebook page, you can join the group, Metro Detroit Real Estate Investors. Their monthly meeting is coming up soon, and you can join them and meet people there who could potentially become your mentor.

I was thinking about starting a property management company here in Detroit as an extension to my current business, and I wanted to know some issues that you have faced as an out of state investor when dealing with property management companies? Also, what are some great things that some property management companies have done for you? What are some qualities of a good property management company?

There are definitely deals still to be had in Detroit. There are new government policies and other local investors driving some great changes in Detroit. Me and my partners are some new and local investors. We have some fresh ideals and we see some great opportunities in Detroit. I wouldn't mind sitting down and having lunch with you and some other investors if you guys are coming to Detroit. I show you some areas around the city.
