I'm not sure about Quickbooks but in Xero, you can take photos of receipts with their mobile app and submit the directly into the system. If you use your scanner you can forward the scans to an email address that will also drop straight into Xero.

Sorry that doesn't really answer the question directly, but if you aren't totally set in QB yet, that could be a good option for the receipts.

You are definitely thinking about this the right way. I think too many entrepreneurs try to figure out bookkeeping themselves and end up in a mess, plus spending a ton of valuable time on it.

It's important to think of bookkeeping, not just as a necessary evil, but also a potential avenue to insight about profitability and projections looking to the future. Best of all, bookkeeping should make tax season much less painful and valuable - definitely worth paying for!

This is a great topic. I think it's often helpful to use Buildium for property management and tracking tenants, but to use either Quickbooks or Xero for tracking the flow of financials and financial reporting.

This article is really well done and helpful and recommends using an actual accounting system: https://www.biggerpockets.com/renewsblog/2016/02/1...
