Wow, these replies are awesome. Thanks a lot to everyone, this helps a lot and (to @Henry Clark's point) these are the general answers I wanted for my general question. I'm seeing that international STR can be great, but probably not the best place to put down my first free 50k for the fist time! Currently narrowing down US markets and a small number of specific international markets (probably not for my first buy).

This is a thread I'll come back to; thanks again.

No worries, I'm always the one responsible for my own (obsessive) research :D

I'll probably DM you at some point soon, just need to do some more investigation first.

That was supposed to be @Mike Lambert. Sorry Michael Baum!

This is great! Thank you!

Robust conversation delivers the best information sometimes. I actually will weigh every single comment in this thread. Also, I've gotta say, while @Michael Baum may post some TLDRs with content that sometimes may seem scalding, I am a "brutal honesty" guy and I don't really see it as personal. Also, to be honest, almost fact-for-fact, his post matches with everything I've found in initial research, which is very good to see!

MB yes, I am actually looking at this site as an investment, not as my own vacation spot. Plenty of reasons for picking this area for investment, which I'll go into with you.

A citizen-partner in the country is no problem, nor is a language barrier.

I agree with and truly appreciate all of the risk factors mentioned here and I am glad I'm part of a community that will both temper me and support me :)

Thanks again!

- Matt

Hi all,

We are considering shifting our focus more toward STR, like everybody else :) There are a couple of Caribbean islands that are close to our heart, and that we feel reasonably safe starting out in. Questions as a first-timer trying international STR: Anybody have experience internationally that they can share regarding safety, security, property management in Latin American Caribbean or similar locations? Also, do we generally post on both AirBnB and VRBO? If so, how does one balance those bookings, especially with instant bookings?

Thanks for any pearls of wisdom,

- Matt

Ok @Jin Lim I'll stick with your events for now, trying like heck to wall my evening off from work. I hope I get to this one and see you all soon.

@Matthew Ridgeway    @Benjamin Sampson   @Paul Ellington    @Daniel Muscarella

Okay so the five of us definitely have to chat at Jin's meeting at least! Jin, February 17th does work for me assuming it's the evening. Unpredictable day job, but I'll probably be able to make it.

And for you all that I tagged, maybe we can do something hyper-local, too, since we are all newbies (excepting Paul), OOS-leaning, and I believe 2 or 3 are Leesburg, 1 of you is Chantilly, and I am Ashburn. I'll wait to see if you are coming to Jin's main thing and then we've gotta connect :)

Oh I should add that we do have cash ready and are interested in certain cities where we have found much more favorable ROI! Just making myself hold off at this time so I can learn. Looking for another newbie to share info/thoughts, and support each other to go through with it.

Hey Jin,

Any more of these scheduled? I'm new to the game, and committed myself to hold off on the trigger finger and spend 2022 building my team. I'm in Ashburn and I liked your mention of potential out of state investors. NoVa deals just don't cut it, in terms of the budget and ROI that I'm looking for. I'd love to meet someone locally who also has OOS ambitions!

Do you know when your next meeting might be?

Thanks,

Matt
