Hello,

My name is Matthew.  I have on and off over the past 8 years thought about getting into real estate investing, but often - like many it seems - felt like the timing wasn't quite right.  I admittedly still feel somewhat like that, but that's only because I feel like I need to get back to my books and give myself a refresher on things such as terminology and analysis techniques. 

A bit about myself:  I am senior software engineer with over 10 years of software development experience and I work remotely for an employer down in Miami, but live in northeast Wisconsin.  This arrangement has afforded me the ability to get that "big city salary" but with the low cost of living of my area.  This means that I generally can save money up fairly quickly.  And I will have to do this again (just finished finishing the basement), so I suspect by the fall or so I'll be ready to start looking for my first property with money in my pocket.

My motivation is somewhat nuanced.  Yes, I'm another one of those individuals who would like to be financially independent, but really my oldest is special needs.  My drive is to basically to put something in place to provide for him after my wife and I are gone.

This means that I will probably be best served to look for something that is more passive while I can focus on my W2. I was thinking SFH because I feel like tenants are probably more likely to stay longer and maybe multi-family and probably just have some PM handle it. My mother in law is a landlord and she is always trying to ward me off from going down REI, but I can't ignore some of the benefits that come from this area of investing (I like tangible things).

I will likely see about joining a local networking group and hopefully finding a mentor, but I'm not really sure what I could offer them to "make the trade" for their time/knowledge, but I suppose I will find out!

If anyone has any suggestions that they think I should research into that would better fit what I talked about rather than SFH - I'd much appreciate it. Otherwise, I'll keep reading the forum; also, hi everyone!
