Hi All - I joined BP with the goal of learning and getting started in real estate. At 53, my goal is to get enough doors to give me the opportunity to "retire" at 60. That involves a lot of work to pay down the existing bills, but that is the goal.

I plan to house hack places for the kids to live while they are at college. One is already there and probably too close to graduation to make it worthwhile (don't want long-term property in Lubbock!), one is heading out next year and the third two years after that. If anyone has any thoughts on how viable that is, I would greatly appreciate it.

@Danny N. If you consider selling it to your son at a below market price, there are tax ramifications, so be sure to talk to you accountant / tax advisor before you go that route.

Hey, Sarah. Yes, you can run into contractors that will talk down to you but that is in your control. I have no problems telling someone I hire that I will not be talked down to, that I hired them for their knowledge and if they cannot treat me, their customer, with respect, that I will take my business elsewhere.

When you first meet with them, you can explain that you are a real estate investor looking to establish a relationship with a contractor for your current and upcoming projects. The prospect of steady work may be enough to prevent being talked down to, but if not, fire them.
