Thank you everyone for your responses. This was VERY helpful. It seems that as long as my employer allows me to moonlight as a realtor I should be in the clear! I kind of figured FHA would be different, and I’m sure VA gets grouped in as well.

Hello BP Friends,

I am considering a career change to become a Mortgage Banker (currently a Mortgage Closer) but I would also be interested in working as a Real Estate Agent. I have tried doing some research into the legality of operating in both capacities, but I have come up empty. I am assuming I can hold both licences, but would I be able to originate a loan for my home buying client?

Being able to provide both services to a client would create a great benefit to both the client (I can give greater closing cost credits) and myself (I will be able to earn BPS as an originator AND commission on the home sale).

I live in Illinois, but work for a Federally Chartered Bank.

This can turn into a tremendous career opportunity if allowed.

Thanks,

Thanks, everyone for the warm welcome. It is great to be a part of such a supportive community. I am definitely looking forward to my future in REI knowing that I have such great resources to lend support.

@Mike Rice good luck in your REI endeavors. I am brand new to BP, but I have already found it to be very insightful and informative. I hope that BP will help to build the confidence to move forward with investing.

@Nate Shields I have not fully committed to investing yet, but I will most likely be looking in the Aurora/Naperville area. At least to start off.

@Zack Karp I am actually a closer for a mortgage lender. I certainly appreciate your offer of assistance. I would be happy to work with you as a resource in the future, once I finally commit.

@Tom Kaider thanks for the comment. This sounds like a great opportunity and I will certainly reach out to you once I am at that stage in taking a step forward.

Hello BP Community,

My name is Ken Leibundguth. I am living in the western suburbs of Illinois with my wife, dog, and have a baby on the way (T-minus 3 months). I do not have much Real Estate experience outside of my current job as a Mortgage Closer. I have a strong background in preparing closing documents and closing figures, but that is where my knowledge ends. I have been considering REI for a little while now, but have not been comfortable financially to make the jump. That leads me to why I joined BiggerPockets. I am a dreamer and have grand goals of becoming successful in real estate investing, however, I am also big on being fully prepared before jumping into anything life changing. I am excited to continue my learning and hope to build a strong network of support.

Thank you,

Ken L
