@Katie L.

Regarding asset protection structure, just keeping it simple for the time being (no syndications/partners). Simple LLC unless advised otherwise (e.g., land trusts).

Regarding CPAs, both.  I've been handling my own taxes up until now but would like to hand off to CPA (mainly because it's a nuisance come tax time and taking, e.g., depreciation deductions, is something I think better handled by a knowledgeable CPA.

RFI - I live in Walnut Creek, CA and work in San Francisco.  Looking for referrals for (a) an asset protection attorney and (b) a CPA, in each case, who are familiar with the needs of a CA-based individual investing in out-of-state buy-and-hold properties.  Extra points if the attorney and CPA are familiar with one another and work well together (i.e., see eye-to-eye on strategies and issues common to the above mentioned real estate investor).  The game plan is to set up an asset protection strategy and scale up an out-of-state (read: outside CA) buy-and-hold investment property portfolio.

@Account Closed, did you use Lerman Law?  Just came across their website when looking for an attorney in the area who specializes in entity formation and asset protection plans.

Hello all. I meant to get this new member post up earlier, but life got pretty busy with the recent birth of my first child, so here it is (better late than never!):

My name is Keith Tidwell, and I am a newbie to the real estate investing community (introduced to it by the very informative BP podcast). I am an executive compensation attorney in San Francisco, CA, and originally from Louisville, KY. I live in the East Bay with my wife, our newborn baby girl and dog.

I recently became interested in real estate investing (specifically, buy-and-hold rental properties) after stumbling across the BP podcast and reading the ever-popular book, Rich Dad, Poor Dad. I joined BP to further enhance my knowledge in this space before jumping on my first deal. I am currently reading David Greene’s long-distance investing book because, like David, I find the CA market to be too rich (read: overpriced) for my investing efforts. I am currently focused on getting a system in place for my long-distance investment plans (currently targeting single-family and small multi-family properties in my hometown of Louisville, KY). My goal is to have a business structure and some go-to contacts in place in the next few weeks so that I can hit the ground running once I find that first deal.

Please feel free to drop me a line if you have experience in the above.  I am always open to meeting like-minded individuals!

Happy Investing,

Post: In Regards To David Greene

I'm a newbie to the forum and work in San Francisco.  I'm originally from Louisville (hence my interest in investing there) and would be interested in a San Fran meetup!
