Post: Real Estate Finance Classes?

I need to understand the basics of real estate finance and numbers are not my strong suit :)

Any good resources? I live in Dallas TX and would like to attend a class or two but seems limited to real-estate classes that just prep you to get your realtor license. Online classes or book recommendations would also help.

Thank you in advance!

Hi @Account Closed! I am a new to bigger pockets, but your post stuck out to me because I am from Farmington CT :) I'm happy that you have found success in that area, I was afraid the market was going down hill with all the major corporations moving away because of higher taxes etc. Which town did you buy your investment property in? and what makes you feel the area is good to invest in? My guess is the good school district.  I would potentially like to invest in something near there one day since it is my hometown. (I'm in Dallas now) Thanks in advance!

Hey @Matt Ayoub! Happy to hear you have found success with it. How did you find the deal?

Thanks!

Katie

@Mike Lambert - I appreciate the perspective and offer to help. I am definitely trying to learn as much as I can right now and grow my knowledge base. Investing overseas seems a bit daunting, but like you mentioned, it could be easier to find a great deal due to less competition - you just know about the different rules and regulations of that geography. Once you can get over that hurdle I do not see why it would not make for great STR situation. My intuition tells me there are a lot of great deals outside the US. Thank you!

Thanks, Paul! Sorry... "Newbie" over here. What does STR stand for? And that sounds like a lot of cons... but is the return on investment worth it in overseas investments?

Hi Everyone! I am new to this.... Pretty much in the "learning" phase aka waiting to save up enough for my first down payment on an investment property (Just a few months away!). One thing I'm very drawn to but haven't seen much about is real estate investing abroad. For example, buying an apartment in Mexico (ex, Tulum) and renting it out to tourists on Airbnb. Has anyone done this and do they suggest it? What are the pros & cons?

Hi @Nicole A.! I'm just starting out as well. As silly as it sounds, my biggest fear is having a mortgage - I just paid off my college loans (yay!) and I hated the feeling of being in debt. Ideally, I would want a consistent rental income where rent would cover the cost of the mortgage and then some...but its just the feeling of having the mortgage looming over my head. I'm curious how people got comfortable with a large mortgage. People like my parents and my parent's parents spent years chipping away at their mortgage and I guess that is just family programing that is hard to shake. Do you have these fears?
