@Pat L.:

Thanks for the info!  Do you have any more info? How much did it cost?

Im hoping to find a resource for all sorts of remodeling/construction questions too. Any ideas of good websites for forums for that?

@Marcia Maynard and @Joe Splitrock - We are still learning and looking at how to best run the numbers for the rent. As it is, we will already be on the high side for this area. I don't know about increasing the rent due to the garage or we might be too high.   We are paying $200 / month for a storage unit, this would be double that size.

Thank you both for sharing your stories. I hope we avoid any issues like those!

@Colleen F. - they will have tons of storage. We are in the middle of the remodel, and have had some opportunities to make sure of this.  Im curious to be able to answer what you have mentioned with "according to laws about foreign loads in your area"

we are talking to someone we know about buying his inherited property.

we just did a title search, it has a lot of taxes owed. something else I didn't think about, it shares a common walkway with other houses.  (in a row)

I'm not sure all this impacts. who is responsible for snow removal, repairs, etc?

this is from the title search:

"All that certain lot or piece of ground situate in the Borough of XXxX, County of Allegheny and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, being parts of Lot Nos. x, y and z in the Plan Subdividing a Portion of the [MunicipalityName] Place Plan as recorded in the Recorder's Office of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania...

"ALSO TOGETHER with and subject to the easement of passage way for the use and benefit

of the owners, their heirs and assigns of premises known as numbers [1a, 1b,1c] [street name], which said passage way is more particularly bounded and described

as follows, to-wit:

BEGINNING at a point...then it just goes on to give the location in coordinates.

How do I go about investigating this further?

Hi Marcia, the house already has off street parking and a long driveway wrapping around the house.

we do have a storage unit, but wanted to switch to using these garages , that do not lead into the house, to save on costs.

We plan on renting a property but keeping the garage available for our own storage.

The garage has electric, just two light switches for inside and out.

The tenants will still have off street parking for their own use.

We are thinking of rewiring to add an outlet for the garage.

Electric will be in tenants name.

We wont use it often or much - do we need to put this on a separate electric?

Can we just indicate the garage will being used by us in the lease agreement?

Thanks,

Judy

Is there a forum or other recommended website resource to ask questions related to remodeling etc?

Looking to seal a roof of a garage with something that can be walked on.

Hi All,

Im not sure where to post this, but we are preparing to reseal a garage roof for a house that we plan on renting.

We want it to be a walkable surface.

Are rehabbing / constructions questions best asked here - or is there another place to ask that you can recommend?

Also, anyone have any input on the fact we plan on renting the house and keeping the garage.

We want to update the electric. Can we deduct our usage from their utility somehow?
