Post: Suggestions for Rochester NY Area 203k Contractors and GM's

What work are you planning on having done? That may help with suggesting contractors.

If I remember correctly from my 203k loan it's illegal for your lender to suggest any contractors for you to use with your loan.

Finding a contractor for a 203k is very similar to finding a contractor in a normal situation but scheduling for them to see the property is more difficult. You should get bids from multiple contractors (try to schedule all for the same day and approximate time), ask for references, etc.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

@Frank Oudheusden I've heard about investing remotely but haven't looked into or read about it much. How has your experience with remote investing been? Is it a hassle with viewing properties, taxes, etc.?

@Paul Timmins Student Housing is something that I've been thinking about further down the road. There are some complexes in the area that target students but students are generally unhappy with their experiences there, so there is certainly an opportunity/market. Thanks for the tip!

@Ali Boone My major is Mechanical Engineering, Rochester is certainly interesting and I think we'll see some innovative things from the budding start up/college environment in the near future. Sidenote: I read your article yesterday about LLCs and it was great. I had been in the mindset of definitely forming an LLC for investing but after reading your article I will be doing more research on the matter. Thanks!

@Mark Turner

Hi everyone,

My name is Jason Ryan and I'm currently a Mechanical Engineering student at Rochester Institute of Technology. I'll be graduating in December 2013 and after that I plan to start investing in real estate part time in the Rochester area. More specifically I will be looking at rental properties. I've been reading blog posts and beginner guides around biggerpockets.com and I'm sure I will continue to do so, It looks like there's a great community here with a lot of intelligent, driven people!
