Hi guys,

I live on the VA/TN state line in the city of Bristol. I am looking for a trust worthy contractor who services my area. Does anyone have experience with any contractors in this area that you would recommend?

Thanks!

Hey guys,

My wife just got her unfortunate residency match for med school, which will be in Harlan Kentucky…we currently live 2 hours away in Virginia, and because my job is here, she will be moving in July. We’ve got to figure out her living arrangements pretty quickly so I wanted to hop on here and see if anyone knew any agents or properties in that area. Thanks in advance!

Quote from @Theresa Harris:

Run the numbers on your current home and see what it would look like if you rented it. Not all homes make for a good rental.  Buying a duplex is a good idea, even if you lived there for a year or two and then moved back into your current home.

For prices, talk to your bank to see how much you can borrow.  For houses, it depends on what you want and how much houses cost in your area.  A good starter home often works well.  Ideally something with at least 2 beds and 2 baths.  Make sure the bedrooms are a good size.

My current home is a 3 bed, 1 bath home. The location is in walking distance from a Walmart and right down the road from a new, large shopping center. There is also a huge casino being built with all kinds of shops and stores. I feel that it would rent easily if I were to move out and use it as a rental. I have also considered building a second building in what is the “office” right now.

Glad to have you as a part of this awesome community, Josh!

You found the right place for information.

Thank you!!

We don't know what your financial situation is, but I would say you should get a duplex or triplex, live in one unit and rent the other(s). You can learn slowly as you gain experience and equity, and then move on to buy more properties either by keeping the first and refi'ing, or selling it and buying more.

Ask questions on here and do a lot of learning....

I am a single income family, as my wife is in med school, so I do not have money to throw around. However, I do have a good bit of equity in my current home.

If I were to purchase a duplex in order to house hack, would you recommend turning my current home into a rental?

Hi @Josh Hall welcome to BiggerPockets and congratulations on doing the work.

Like others have said in this post, it is a hard question to answer without knowing your specific situation, goals, timelines, and resources.

The good news is: you’re in the right place and took the right first step - asking others for help!

I still remember when we were getting started and had all the same questions.

Do you have any sense of what sort of real estate investing you’d like to do?

In any case, we love to talk real estate and help others get started. All about giving back so if you want, please do not hesitate to reach out and DM me. Happy to share all the resources, tools, tips, tricks we put together and keep using today. Happy to chat on a call too if that is easier.

Well done on taking the first step!

I am really interested in long term rentals with Single Family or duplex, triplex, ect. Thanks for the info!

Price range depends on your income, savings, credit score and the area you end up deciding on. That area will take much research, and we can't answer with no information from you. Do you prefer LTRs, STRs, MTRs, Commercial, SF/MF....lots of options and they all have pros and cons. What appeals to you?

I am mostly interested in LTR with SF or MF

Hey Guys!

I just joined BP yesterday and am excited to be apart of this group!

Desperate to not work my 9-5 job my whole life, and to build wealth for myself and my family, I jumped on Google and started searching…I eventually came across real estate investing and started listening to podcasts. I quickly knew this is exactly where I want to be. I just discovered the BP podcast this week and have been thoroughly enjoying listening.
Financial freedom is definitely my biggest goal and I am ready to begin my investing journey, I just don’t know exactly where to begin…

How would you suggest I choose a specific area to invest? And what price range would you suggest for a newbie like myself?

Hey guys! Stoked to be apart of this group!

I am actually based right on the Virginia/Tennessee line, but I live on the Virginia side. I am interested in investing in my TN/VA area, but also interested in Memphis, TN.

My goals with BiggerPockets are to gain as much knowledge as my brain can handle, and to eventually purchase my first rental property!

Fun fact about myself, I am basically a fish…I love being in and around water. The lake is my home away from homes and my goal is to one day purchase a home right on the lake!
