Post: Principle 1: Don't Criticize, Condemn, or Complain

“You’re wrong.” These words will put you at odds with anyone. Try it. It’s a tad unethical but I’m experimenting. Again and again I am amazed at people’s deflation. Their shoulders sag, their tone sharpens, and their confidence melts.

Onboard the USS Carney we are tasked with learning the ship’s systems. I was bored by a friends lecture on radars. I interrupted him after ten minutes of verbose detail and said he didn’t know what he was talking about. He tripped on his tongue. He didn’t have to say it, I knew what he was thinking. He wanted to slap the **** out of me. His eyes saved his hands the work.

We know I didn’t have a clue. But I had to break the monotony and run my experiment. It turned the humdrum lesson into one worth value. People do not like to be wrong. Our first technique from How To Win Friends and Influence People: Don’t criticize, condemn, or complain.

“…criticisms are like homing pigeons.”

Catch yourself when you are not abiding. You will get good. After years of playing, I habitually- usually when I’m hungry- drop the ball. Knowing that I have bobbled allows me to quickly reorient.

Constructive habits should orient your life. If you’re not going up, you’re going down. I’m not helping a thing when I break these simple rules. When I abide I have saved a lot of face.

We are products of our habits. I know this is true. You can’t tell me I’m wrong. I always dismount my bike from the same side. I always use my right hand to eat. I am always quick to find fault. Some of these habits make sense. Rationale is a gift. Don’t let it collect dust like an old college textbook.

The more I read the larger my world becomes. The more I read the smaller I seem. You and I, don’t have to be right. Ever. It will not make us bigger. It will not save us time. It will not win us friends.

So forgive me if the next time you are complaining I interrupt you with, “You’re wrong.” “To know all is to forgive all.” Let that marinade.

If you get the chance to play catch or nicely tell someone they are wrong (notice your reaction if someone tells you). Tell me about it! I’d love to hear. What are some simple habits you have overlooked? For now, practice patience and stop whining. This will help us while we network to build our real estate businesses. 

P.S. Sorry Dad for the times I bitched when you made me and my friends do chores on a hungover Sunday morning. I wish I didn’t know now, what I knew back then.

@Kai Hodge I am active duty Navy as well. It is good to see others are planning for their retirement through real estate. Do you have any tips on how you started while being active duty? Thanks!

@Miller Charles Welcome to BP man! I am Active Duty in the Navy. I am currently stationed in Rota, Spain. I have been listening to the podcasts everyday and they are soooo good. I have often heard Josh and Brandon refer to real estate investors as "problem solvers".  This is a unique and optimistic way to look at our industry. I would really like to hear some stories of problematic scenarios that you may have solved as an investor. Please share but keep private information sensitive. Let's spread some smiles! 

This is me posting... I love good, undeniable, statistics. So often they can be messed with in order to favor an opinion. Good stuff here Dave. Thanks.  Is there an 80/20 principle that could be analysed for a profile. From what 20 percent of our efforts do 80 percent of our results come from? I am always interested in being as efficient as possible. Only so much time in our day. You know? Thanks again. 

@Jerry W. Thanks for saying hello! I have been curious about that. I am still trying to figure out how to analyse markets. How much of an effect on the markets has there been from the rock bottom oil prices? I have ties to that industry so I am curious! Send me a message and we can talk further.

I am currently looking to build my business initially around wholesaling and multi-family buy and hold units. What is your specialty?

Hello Bigger Pockets! Throughout my college days I recall cooking burgers in the sweltering heat of a bustling restaurant kitchen. Coming home I smelled like grease. It was that lingering smell that stayed with me for days on end no matter how many times I showered. After covering a New Year's Eve shift and getting a fifty cent raise for my efforts (From 7.50 to 8.00 an hour) I had had enough. I felt under appreciated and unfulfilled. I knew I was spending time building someone else’s dreams!

In between the late nights and showers I was introduced to network marketing and the idea of life beyond a 9-5! With the introduction to lifestyle design came my more important introduction to personal development. I fell out of the network marketing company due to my lack of personal development. I continued on to finish my degree from Colorado State University in Natural Resource Recreation and Tourism. I was attracted to this degree because I love talking to people, working with my hands, and being outside (Can you see where this is going?). I wanted to fulfill the three criterions and moved to Wyoming. I was guiding bird hunts while striving to become a stronger version of myself. Through all of my reading and life experiences I have developed a hankering to become financially free.

For me this means I have ceased to exchange my time for money. What a dreadful feeling it is when you have to work to pay bills. No more burger flipping for 8.00 an hour! Via the pod-casts my quest has led me here! Real Estate has a special place in my portfolio because of the passive income possibilities.

Rewind. While I was in college I studied abroad on a program called Semester at Sea. Basically it was a floating university that laid the travel bug deep in my soul. I tried to find that similar atmosphere and I am currently serving in the United States Navy. I am stationed in Rota, Spain. I have another 3 years and some change left on my contract. This is more than enough time to work my way into real estate, learn the in's and out's, and begin investing.

My goal is to be financially free by the time I am out of the Military while maintaining a high moral standard. One day I dream of traveling the world with my friends and family. I help by keeping my expenses low and my sights high! I would like to get started by running financial analysis of properties for prospective buyers. I am glad you guys are enjoying the notes! The biggest takeaway I have pulled out of the book is paying myself first. I am in the military currently. We don't get paid a lot but the beauty is that it is 100% disposable income because everything is taken care of! I am taking advantage of the investing opportunity. Everyone keep up the reading and update me if you come across any nuggets!
