@JD Martin thank you, I appreciate your reply because it made me reflect on my interests, goals, and ambitions. This is a tough one to elaborate on here in this forum the because of the depth of my answer but I will try my best.
Like many others, I wasn't exactly quite sure what I wanted to do when I came to college. I knew I had a drive to learn about business, business strategy, finance, and economics. I have a passion for business in general. In high school while others were reading harry potter, I was reading "rich dad" and the "guide to financial independence". I have no aspirations to be super "rich", I just have a desire to have a high level of financial intelligence and independence. I assessed my strengths. Im not extremely entrepreneurial so starting a business from absolutely nothing after high school did not seem like the best fit for me. I am a hard worker though. So, naturally business school was my choice and I love it so far. So next, why accounting? Accounting is an important foundation to any business. I excel at math and problem solving. I want to have a deep understanding of how businesses operate. Also, tax planning and strategy is something that I enjoy studying. I may find out that I do absolutely love working at the "corporate conglomerate" and stay there! I wont know until my internship this winter.
I do not "hate" accounting, I actually enjoy my course work and could see myself in the field. I have thought about working for myself in accounting by obtaining a client base. But I do not feel its realistic to start right out of school. I definitely would want to set myself up for success. I feel like going into industry, building a reputation, building relationships, and finding out how a successful accounting firm operates is not wasted time.
Next, I didn't stumbled upon the possibilities of real estate until about a year ago. When I found real estate though, I realized that I do have a passion for it and I may want to it be my career. Being in school full time, low income, and lack of credit I haven't quite figured out how to "do" it full time without having huge risks. I am currently trying to put together my first deal though. I do disagree on picking a different major for someone that wants to do real estate full time, an accounting degree has a ton of use for a career in real estate.
Im am picking a field that I enjoy. By studying accounting (which I do like) I can stay in it and invest in real estate on the side or follow my passion and invest full time. Working at a enjoyable corporate firm that provides a relatively high income for 5 years in order to set myself up for a successful long term real estate career seems pretty ideal to me.
I'd love to hear your thoughts though Jd!
