Post: Single Family Basement Rental

I am currently looking at a single-family house with an awesome basement with a separate entrance to the basement in NW Grand Rapids. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with converting a single-family to a duplex or renting out a basement/upper unit? I would love to house-hack the property and live in the finished basement and rent out the rest of the house. I am running into not understanding the zoning laws and am certain this is allowed. Is the best next step to call the municipal building to get clarity on this?

Welcome Jason! I just moved back to Grand Rapids after 5 years away myself. This is a great market to start investing in. I would recommend considering a house hack to start, but certainly you can go with most investing strategies here.
