I am currently looking at a single-family house with an awesome basement with a separate entrance to the basement in NW Grand Rapids. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with converting a single-family to a duplex or renting out a basement/upper unit? I would love to house-hack the property and live in the finished basement and rent out the rest of the house. I am running into not understanding the zoning laws and am certain this is allowed. Is the best next step to call the municipal building to get clarity on this?

Hello BiggerPockets! My name is Jason Majerle and I am new to real estate investing. My brother Ryan Majerle and I are partnering up and excited to get started and buy our first property. We both grew up just north of GR and were involved in athletics through college. I am in secondary education moving back to GR here in the spring. Ryan is in logistics over in the Detroit area and is ready to get back involved on the west side of the state.
