The Rio Grande Valley is about 90% Hispanic, and a portion do have dual citizenship. However most who live here are US citizens and have been for generations, although there are a number with Mexican citizenship and legal residency in the US. There is a sizable number of well-to-do folks coming over from Mexico and buying second homes or investment properties in the area.

@Oren Kachel  We're getting growth due to increased cross-border trade, some oil money, as well as the general growth that Texas is seeing as a whole. It seems like we're getting more Mexican nationals moving in who are looking for a safe place to park their money. All this is anecdotal and not based on any research I've read. McAllen is literally the cheapest place to live in America, so that doesn't hurt when trying to attract new folks to move here...

Also, you can definitely self manage. In a market heavy with vacation rentals it will be easy to find your own cleaner and handyman. Don't worry about all of your bookings coming from your manager's website. Airbnb and VRBO will do you just fine. I used to chase repeat bookings, and while it does show that you have a desirable property a new guest's money spends the same.

Look up some of the automation tools mentioned on the thread if you are worried about the time commitment. But I spend about five minutes a week on my STR.
