Hi Everyone,

We currently live in Austin, TX in a duplex that we house hack. We are looking to make our next investment in San Antonio as the market appears to be more affordable and a better opportunity to cash flow.

If you have experience investing or are a realtor in the area I would love to connect!

Best,

Grayson

Thanks everyone for the advice.

I think we are going to refinance our duplex as an investment property and then just move in the van full time, rent both sides out and then find a brrrr property that we don’t have to occupy.

My biggest concern was being able to still claim residence in Texas but after some research it looks like we can claim residency as long as we keep our van registered here, have Texas driver’s license, and have the intent to return to tx after our travels.

Hi @James Horner,

Interesting. I guess my biggest concern with have a primary residence is for tax purposes and being able to claim I live in the same state for my w2 job.

Other than that, it is trying to figure out how to continue investing with low down payments.

I wonder if we could purchase a sfh with an adu and live in the adu but spend most of our time traveling. While renting the main home.

@Wayne Brooks then what would we claim as a primary residence?

Hi everyone,

We are approaching 1 year since we closed on our duplex. We purchased the duplex as our first brrr / house hack project. One year later and here we are ready to rent out both units, reap the benefits of our hard work, and move on to our next project.

But….. we have decided to try VAN LIFE. Where we will move into our self converted camper van and travel the lower 48 states, hopefully save money, and collect all the memories.

How do we navigate this with taxes and mortgage rules? We will be refinancing our duplex as we purchased it with a 3.5% down FHA loan. And we both work full time remote w2 jobs.

Can we claim the duplex as our primary residence if it is fully rented out and we are traveling? Can we purchase a new multi family with an FHA and claim a unit as our primary residence but still travel full time? If so, could we Airbnb while we travel, yet still claim it as our primary during first year?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks.
