Thanks a lot everyone! So the issue isn't the my new tenants can't make their own account - they already did with no problem. It's just the existing balance. So the utility company will be the one going to collections to go after the old person who had the account? But he already talked with the company and they shut down his account because he said he subleased it - so can't he just argue with them that they let him close it, so inevitably the problem just sits with me?

Thanks Jason (and Matt), how do I find out if it's my responsibility in my state? I'm in NJ. The tenant told the power company that he subleased it out and that's why he had to be taken off the account. However, he never told me about that so it's technically invalid (lease says he must approve sublet with me, never did that). So in court he's still on the lease because he signed it right? So I can take him to court for it if he is responsible in NJ?

It actually wasn't in my name! It was originally in the tenants name but he somehow closed his account in November (halfway through the lease) and just stopped paying. How on Earth that works I do not know. So according to PSEG it was just not registered in anyone's name the last 6 months. They said they threatened to shut off the power but never actually did it. Lawfully, I can show the lease in court and prove that these tenants are responsible for it right?

Idiot mistake... 3 months after returning security deposit to tenants I get a call from PSEG that there is an unpaid bill greater than $1.5k at the house... What can I do? Can I send this to collections? Will I have to take them to court?

Thanks
