I recommend:

"Real Estate Investing for Dummies" - Good "general purpose" book to give you a brief insight into the market.

Use it to decide where you want to go, then find books on that particular subject.

If you haven't already, I highly suggest you look into other books regarding managing your personal finances. If you can't manage your own day to day finances properly, you will NEVER be successful. If you manage 10 dollars haphazardly, you will not ever be able to manage 10 million dollars.

As some of you may have figured out from my other posts, I am highly against the "cultist" and "guru" mentality out there....

So, this thread is dedicated to those who don't wish to follow the "sheeple" route and want to share some books that they feel is "good and SOLID" advice.

I recommend:

"The Millionaire Next Door" by Stanley and Danko - Good statistical analysis of what, where, and how millionaires live.

"The Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey - Shows how living below your means can mean more money in your pocket.

"The Wealthy Barber" by Chilton - Parable styled story about how living below your means and investing wisely can result in great fortune.

"The Richest Man in Babylon" by Clason - Another parable styled story that gives guidelines on how to manage personal finance.

I haven't read anything by Suze Orman, but from what I understand, she offers some good advice too.

What do YOU recommend? Post up!

Sorry, read "rat racer" and realized this wasn't a serious investment thread.

As for those who haven't fallen for the late night infomercial get rich quick mantra....

Stay in school, get that degree, get a good job, learn to live below your means, pay yourself first, invest wisely, get rich slowly. And I guarantee you WILL get rich. And not have to file bankruptcy when all the creditors call your loans due because they realized you were just another "opm" scam artist. Why? Because you learned to save and pay cash. Not only increasing your cash flow, but increasing your equity.

.........delayed gratification, young people...........delayed gratification.

Get yourselves copies of "Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey and "The Millionaire Next Door" by Danko and Stanley. I also recommend "The Richest Man in Babylon" by Clason and "The Wealthy Barber" by Chilton.

The dummies books are a great way to get an idea of how things work in a broad spectrum. As for detailed analysis, you'll need to do more research in whatever particular area you are interested in.

I also liked the "Property Managment for Dummies". Once again, it is very basic, but a good starter book.

Wow. Glad it wasn't me. I would have already been filing for a false arrest civil suit. Libel is difficult to prove. But, a civil rights violation? Seems the man already has the DA stating that it was without merit. That right there is enough for a defense attorney to jump on the settlement bandwagon.

Seeing how their "super deluxe cream filled" package is around $25000.......

I'll jump up and down and run back and forth across a stage telling you all about the "power of you" for three days for only $15000.

Look at all the money you'll be saving. That's more to invest with. My rich dad would be proud of me, while my poor dad is disgusted with the sham I am running. But, what do I care? I'll also show you how to turn $5 into $50,000,000 in one week without ever having to get up off your couch.

Most of the time, each of these "guru of the week" fellows end up in jail or bankrupt.

The fact that this Kiyosaki fellow flatout lied when his book came out and then used his Amway cohorts to buy enough copies of the book that it instantly became a bestseller should throw up a red flag. But, like most sheeple, those that attend these seminars never bother to actually do any research on the people selling them the crap.

I personally am still waiting to hear how Kiyosaki rolled over a 1031 exchange into a commercial property like he said he did in that first book. Seeing how IT IS FLAT OUT ILLEGAL.

Stick on here, ask questions and find a good REI club to join. Avoid the get rich quick schemes.

I'm surprised that they aren't recruiting for Amway at those seminars.

Call me a "dream stealer", whatever.

To find out about how to purchase at a Texas tax auction, just visit your local county courthouse (or sub-courthouse) and tell them you would like information on tax auctions.

The clerks usually have a document telling you what is needed from you (need a certificate now that states you are not a tax scoflaw), when the auction takes place (each jurisdiction is different), etc.

Right of redemption is 6 months for non-homestead or non-ag property, 24 months for homestead and ag property.

Interest on redemption is 25% the first year and 50% the second.
