@Mujtaba Khan appreciate the input. Thank you!

@Derrick S. I've heard of people splitting a place on opposite schedules. That's definitely a good idea. I've never given Alaska a thought but I'm not totally opposed. Thank you for advice!

@Casey Murray okay thank you!

@Anthony Nguyen I graduated from a maritime state school with a bachelors degree and a U.S Coast Guard license. I got a job out of college on an oil tanker that moves refined oil from Louisiana and brings it to ports around the gulf coast and east coast. It's a fun job for a young guy. Definitely would be hard with a family. If you have any more questions feel free to message me and I'd be happy to answer!

@Blair Russell That is all great advice thank you!

@Shaun Hatton I need to stay in the U.S.

@Joe Splitrock I will definitely consider it. You made all very good points. Thank you for the info. I would have never thought South Dakota but you make it sound good!

@Blair Russell yes I would like to buy instead of rent. I'm renting now because it was convenient but when my lease is up I want to look for something to buy. I'd like to find a place that would be a desirable place for people to rent, but also be in a no income tax state. Due to the nature of my career I can choose anywhere to live in the U.S. Now I'm researching on BP to find a property that would fit my needs.

@Paul Timmins Thank you for all the great resources. I appreciate you taking the time to provide me with great information.

@Pouria Rad okay thank you! I'll let you know.

@Eric Raio I've thought about air bnbing my apartment while I'm gone. I would need someone to manage it while I'm not there. Also I think it goes against my lease to sublet.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome!

@Scott Scharl yes that is an idea I had. I don't mind renting out my place while I'm gone. I would assume I need a property manager while I'm away because I wouldn't be able to check guests in/out or clean the place. I'm the ultimate newbie when it comes to real estate so I need to learn more about what my best option would be.

@Dave Visaya Thank you!

@Chris Mason San Diego represent!

Hello!

My name is Dillon and I currently reside in San Diego, CA. The reason I put "unique lifestyle" in the subject is because I am a Merchant Mariner. I work on an oil tanker in the Gulf of Mexico for half the year. My schedule is 45 days working, 45 days off.

I love my career. However, it pains me to pay rent for my apartment 12 months out of the year when I'm only living there for 6 months out of the year. I'm young, single, and don't have any debt/commitments. My company will fly me to work no matter where I live in the U.S. I want to take advantage of this great opportunity that I have. I just don't know exactly how to go about it.

I look forward to using the tools on this website to gain knowledge about real estate, and I look forward to discussing ideas with people in the community.

Thank you for taking the time to learn a little about me!

Cheers,

Dillon
