Looking for a reliable general contractor and/or a bathroom contractor in the Norfolk area. Thanks in advance!

@Gary Siver is there any possibility this could be asbestos vermiculite insulation that a shoddy contractor laid the tile over?

Thanks for the reply Gary.  This stuff is underneath the tile, motor, and wire mesh in a bathroom that used to be an attic when the house was built in 81.  I am concerned it could be that vermiculite insulation that contains asbestos.  Any way to know if it is durock?  It is like pebbles of black and grey ash.  I am beginning to think I should collect a sample and get it tested... thoughts?

Currently removing tile from a bathroom and am finding a stone like material under the mortar. Is this dry cement? Has anyone ever encountered this before? The location is Virginia. The house was built in 81 but this bathroom was a later addition around 2007.
